Historical Buildings of Bungonia NSW that are still standing

If you were a visitor from those early settlement days coming back in a time machine, you would be struck by the differences as well as the similarities. Still standing as proud as they ever were are:

  • The Police Station; built in 1907 and closed in 1932.

  • The home now called MIZPAH was built around 1830-1840. On the same property, there is also an inn with baking oven, which would have been used to provide shelter and serve as a safe place for travellers, along with provisions to stock on the long, rough, dangerous route Southwards. There were three Inns on these blocks of land
  • The Hope Inn; built in 1837 on the opposite end of the village to the north. The Inn closed in 1919.

  • The Parsonage; built in 1841 and closed in 1888.
William B Clarke, a Colonial geologist and cleric (also Headmaster of Kings School Parramatta)  visited and stayed at Bungonia Parsonage several times in the1840s and 50's.

  • St Michael's Catholic Church; commenced in 1839 and finally opened in 1847. This is the oldest Catholic Church still used as a church and still in original footprint on the Australian Mainland. This has been partially restored with further restoration work being planned.

  • Christ Church; an Anglican church, begun in 1877 and finally finished in 1893. This is a most beautiful English Gothic style church with magnificent stained-glass windows donated in memory of parishioners and a former Rector. Christ Church has been listed on the State Heritage Register.
Wikipedia has an excellent, detailed summary of the history of Christ Church Anglican Church in Bungonia village, the parish in general and those that were a part of its creation.

  • The Public School building; opened in 1882 and closed in 1973 as a school. However, it continued operating as an educational centre until it was sold in 1994.

All these buildings are now used as private residences, with the exception of St. Michael's Church. While restoration of the church is planned, the Parsonage is derelict and Quarry-owned.
